South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dismissed three ministers in his latest Cabinet shake-up, with no official explanation provided for the changes.
The announcement was made Monday via the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), where a presidential decree revealed that Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Ruben Madol Arol had been removed and replaced by Wek Mamer Kuol.
In a separate decree, Kiir also dismissed Awut Deng Acuil, Minister of General Education and Instruction, appointing Kuyok Abol Kuyok as her successor. Additionally, Trade and Industry Minister Joseph Mum Majak was removed, with Atong Kuol Manyang, the former deputy governor of Jonglei State, named as his replacement.
The president did not provide reasons for the dismissals, a move that comes amid ongoing political challenges in the oil-rich nation.
South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, has faced years of instability, including a civil war sparked by tensions between Kiir and his deputy, Riek Machar. While a 2018 power-sharing agreement aimed to restore peace, its implementation has remained complex and contentious.
Under the terms of the agreement, Kiir retains the authority to appoint and dismiss government officials at both the national and state levels. However, for officials representing other political parties, he must secure approval from their respective leadership before making such decisions.
