A gas tanker explosion in Lagos State on Tuesday night killed two people and injured 14 others, authorities confirmed. The blast occurred beneath Otedola Bridge, a major highway linking Lagos to other parts of the country. The explosion triggered a massive fire that destroyed several vehicles and buildings, sending thick smoke into the night sky.
Officials said the tanker, which was transporting compressed natural gas (CNG) to a nearby station, overturned while making a turn. Gas leaked from the vehicle, igniting a fire that spread rapidly. According to Lagos State Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, four buildings were destroyed, and 15 vehicles were burned beyond recognition. “The accident likely happened as the truck tried to ascend the link road to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway via Otedola Bridge,” he said.
Rescue teams are still at the scene, searching for victims. Authorities warned that the casualty count could rise as recovery efforts continue. “So far, two bodies have been recovered, but the total number of victims is yet to be determined,” Hundeyin added. A private hospital near the explosion site sustained damage, though details on those affected remain unclear. The tanker’s registration details are not yet available, but several shops and household properties were also lost in the fire.
This incident marks the 10th fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria since the beginning of the year, raising concerns over the safety of transporting hazardous materials through busy areas. Emergency crews are working to contain further risks, while authorities urge residents to stay away from the area as investigations continue.
