Sudan’s army chief and head of the Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, hosted Egypt’s General Intelligence Director Hassan Mahmoud Rashad in Port Sudan for high-level talks on regional cooperation and post-war recovery.
The meeting follows recent military advances by the Sudanese Armed Forces, who have regained control over strategic areas, including all of Sennar and Al Jazirah states, as well as most of Khartoum, after pushing out the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Rashad reportedly delivered a message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, focusing on boosting bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Sudan’s Sovereignty Council quoted Burhan as expressing gratitude for Egypt’s continued support and historical solidarity, emphasizing the deep-rooted bonds between the two nations. He called for stronger ties to serve mutual interests.
Egypt’s ambassador to Sudan, Hani Salah, had earlier reaffirmed Cairo’s readiness to assist in rebuilding Sudan, with plans to help restore critical infrastructure such as damaged bridges in Khartoum and the Merowe Dam.
The war in Sudan, which broke out in April 2023, has displaced millions. Egypt alone has received around 1.5 million Sudanese refugees, though some have begun returning as government forces regain control.
