Peace negotiations in Sudan start without involvement from the opposing factions. Despite the absence of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, fresh peace negotiations to end Sudan’s 16-month conflict have begun in Geneva.
Leading the negotiations, the United States emphasized that the discussions must carry on in any case, saying, “We are going to try to do everything we can to try to end this horrific crisis in Sudan.” The army had said that it would not be attending the negotiations, citing the RSF’s noncompliance with the terms set forth in Saudi Arabia the previous year.
Despite having originally flown to Switzerland, RSF delegates later withdrew their invitation without giving a reason. International delegations from the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the African Union, and the United Nations attended the talks on Wednesday, despite the absence of the major factions.
