On Monday, armed men launched a surprise attack on a bus traveling the Moyale-Nairobi route, injuring six people.
According to a police report, at approximately 8:30 p.m., unidentified armed men who were unknown to the driver stopped a bus carrying fifty passengers and began shooting at the vehicle.
The attack resulted in six people being shot, all of whom sustained limb injuries. Five of the injured victims are currently recovering after being rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
The condition of a female passenger, who was shot in the abdomen with a bullet lodged in her chest, remains critical.
Shortly after the bus attack, the gunmen also targeted a Toyota Land Cruiser that was following the bus in the same area.
One passenger in the Land Cruiser was killed when the armed men opened fire on the vehicle. Fortunately, the driver managed to stop the vehicle quickly and escaped the incident without injury.
Since the attack, the Moyale police have been actively searching for the armed individuals responsible for the violence in the area.
Moyale has faced several security challenges recently, prompting residents to call for immediate action. On August 12, 2024, two armed men had previously broken into Odda Mission Secondary School and kidnapped two South Korean nationals, leading Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli to hold a security briefing in the region last month.
Masengeli has urged local police to work closely with the community to address security gaps and provide any information that could lead to the apprehension of the armed attackers.
