A devastating fire broke out in one of the dormitories at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni West, Nyeri County, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 students. Dr. Resilia Onyango, spokeswoman for the National Police Service, confirmed the incident and reported that 14 additional students, who sustained severe burns, have been hospitalized.
The fire, which occurred on Thursday night, left the deceased students with severe burn injuries. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
An investigation into the incident is underway. A team of police officials, including Martin Nyuguto, the Director of Homicide, and John Onyango, the Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been dispatched to the school to begin the inquiry.
