In a major effort to enhance economic empowerment, over 5,000 chicks have been distributed to women across Matabeleland North Province. This initiative, driven by the Zanu PF Women’s League, spans all 13 constituencies within the province, reflecting a commitment to bolstering women’s roles in local development and economic activities.
The distribution ceremony was held at the Zanu PF headquarters in Lupane, where Cde Judith Ncube, Deputy Secretary for Women Affairs, delivered a key address on behalf of Secretary Cde Mabel Chinomona. Ncube highlighted that the initiative is a significant component of President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which aims to elevate Zimbabwe to an upper-middle-income economy by ensuring inclusive and equitable development throughout the country.
Each province received 5,000 road runner chicks, with the program structured as a pass-on scheme. This approach ensures that the benefits extend beyond immediate recipients to other community members, promoting widespread participation and impact. Ncube emphasized that this effort is not merely a short-term aid but a strategic investment in sustainable development, encouraging women to engage in poultry farming and other agricultural ventures.
The Zanu PF Women’s League also plans to incentivize successful project management and the establishment of sustainable businesses. This strategy is designed to motivate women to undertake entrepreneurial activities and contribute significantly to the local economy. By recognizing and rewarding effective project management, the initiative aims to foster a culture of business acumen and resilience among women.
Ncube urged the beneficiaries to leverage the provided resources to enhance their livelihoods and to explore climate-smart agricultural practices. She emphasized that such practices, which make efficient use of natural resources and contribute to environmental sustainability, can provide additional benefits such as earning carbon credits.
Cde Dora Msimanga, chairperson of the Zanu PF Women’s League in Matabeleland North, commended the President’s initiative for its potential to reduce the economic burden on men, who often bear the primary responsibility for supporting their families. Msimanga highlighted that the distribution of chicks would empower women to better manage family needs and educational expenses, thereby improving overall community welfare.
Beneficiary Ms. Lindiwe Mkwananzi from Tsholotsho Ward 1 expressed her deep appreciation for the initiative. She conveyed her optimism that the chicks will positively impact her livelihood and thanked the Zanu PF Women’s League for their unwavering support and dedication to women’s empowerment. This gesture, she noted, represents a meaningful step towards improving economic conditions for women and their families in the province.
