On Thursday, the Kenyan government strongly condemned the worsening humanitarian situation in the Middle East, reflecting growing concerns over the region’s escalating political tensions.
At a special session of the United Nations General Assembly convened to address the Middle East crisis, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ekitila Lokaale, voiced the country’s support for Palestinian self-determination and urged an immediate ceasefire between the warring states. Ambassador Lokaale expressed deep distress over the severe humanitarian impacts of the ongoing conflict, condemning all acts of terrorism, including the devastating attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians on October 7.
Ambassador Lokaale criticized the collective punishment meted out against Palestinians, noting that it disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations, such as women, children, and the elderly. He also condemned the widespread destruction of essential civilian infrastructure by Israeli forces, emphasizing the humanitarian toll of these actions. Lokaale warned that the United Nations’ inaction in addressing these issues could seriously undermine its credibility as a global guarantor of peace and security.
This condemnation comes in the wake of recent violent incidents in Lebanon, including attacks in Beirut and other areas on Wednesday. These attacks resulted in at least 20 deaths and over 450 injuries, according to local reports. The assaults, believed to be carried out by forces allied with Israel targeting Hezbollah, also resulted in significant civilian casualties, including among children and women.
Kenya’s approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict has traditionally been cautious, with the country opting for a diplomatic stance and issuing formal statements only on rare occasions. Earlier in the year, on April 14, President William Ruto condemned Iran’s missile attacks on Israel, describing aggression as a disturbing development that exacerbates the already volatile situation in the Middle East. This stance underscores Kenya’s careful navigation of international conflicts while advocating for humanitarian considerations and peaceful resolutions.
