Zimbabwe has received a donation of 1,000 tonnes of maize meal from Rwanda in response to President Mnangagwa’s appeal following a drought caused by El Niño, which has impacted both Zimbabwe and much of Southern Africa. This support is crucial as the Zimbabwean government works to implement its strategy to mitigate food shortages and ensure national food security.
During the handover ceremony in Harare, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe expressed appreciation for Rwanda’s timely assistance. He stated that the maize meal will be distributed to vulnerable communities hit hardest by the drought, addressing urgent food needs.
Minister Garwe remarked on the special bilateral relationship between Zimbabwe and Rwanda, thanking the Rwandan government for their quick response to the crisis.
He also highlighted the growing partnership between the two nations through various cooperation agreements that enhance cultural exchange and strengthen ties.
Rwandan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr. James Musoni, praised Zimbabwe’s resilience in facing the drought and stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration. He noted that Rwanda is committed to supporting Zimbabwe, recalling previous instances of mutual aid during crises.
Ambassador Musoni stated that after President Mnangagwa’s appeal in April, President Kagame quickly sent the maize meal, reflecting the spirit of unity among African nations.
The maize will be distributed through government programs to ensure it reaches the most affected areas. This initiative is part of a broader pattern of cooperation between Rwanda and Zimbabwe, which includes agreements in trade, investment, education, mining, tourism, and agriculture.
In 2023, President Mnangagwa sought support for flood victims in Rwanda, while Rwanda previously aided Zimbabwe during Cyclone Idai in 2019, demonstrating the strong bond and mutual respect between the two countries.
