Eben Etzebeth Poised to Break Springbok Cap Record in Crucial Match Against Argentina
Eben Etzebeth is on the verge of making history as he is set to become the most-capped player for South Africa after being named in the Springboks’ starting lineup for their upcoming match against Argentina in Mbombela. The lock will earn his 128th cap during the final round of the Rugby Championship, surpassing Victor Matfield’s previous record.
Head coach Rassie Erasmus has welcomed back key players, including Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Cheslin Kolbe, who were absent during the Springboks’ defeat to the Pumas in Santiago del Estero. Manie Libbok remains in the squad despite a costly missed penalty in the previous match, teaming up with Jaden Hendrikse in a new half-back pairing.
Erasmus explained the decision to recall rested players, stating, “We planned to bring back the players we rested last week to ensure a core group remained in the South African time zone, allowing them to integrate smoothly back into the team.” The Springboks need just one point from the match to clinch the Rugby Championship title.
“It’s going to be a significant challenge against an Argentine team that is building something special and will give everything to win their first title in this competition. We selected this team with that in mind,” he added.
Reflecting on Etzebeth’s achievement, Erasmus noted, “As a former Springbok, I can attest to what a massive achievement it will be for Eben to become the most capped Springbok ever. We are all very proud of him and want to make this a special and memorable occasion for him.”
Etzebeth, a double World Cup winner, debuted in 2012 and will partner the less experienced Ruan Nortje at Mbombela Stadium. Libbok’s selection at fly-half comes with Stormers teammate Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu unavailable due to injury. Although Libbok has faced challenges since starting as the first-choice fly-half in last year’s World Cup, Erasmus expressed confidence in his abilities.
“Manie’s general play is fantastic, and he brings a lot of energy and playmaking abilities to the backline. He dictates play well, so we fully back Manie to do the job for us at fly-half,” Erasmus stated, adding that addressing goal-kicking issues is a collective effort the team is working on.
As the Springboks aim for victory and the title, all eyes will be on Etzebeth as he prepares to make his mark in South African rugby history.
