Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, voiced serious concern over growing international polarization and the diminishing role of the UN Security Council on the global stage.
He condemned the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the spread of the conflict into the broader region, attributing it to the international community’s failure to take a strong stance against Israeli settlement occupation. He emphasized that granting full UN membership to the State of Palestine is crucial for preserving the two-state solution.
Attaf also highlighted Algeria’s commitment to ending colonization in Western Sahara and expressed support for the UN Secretary-General’s efforts to resume negotiations between Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO. This, he said, would ensure the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination. On Libya, he urged the international community to address foreign interference, which is fueling instability.
Regarding Africa, Attaf stressed the need for African-led solutions to the continent’s crises and called for Africa to have a greater role in the Security Council, correcting historic injustices. Algeria reaffirmed its solidarity with the Sahel region, asserting that the country’s security and stability are tied to that of its African neighbors. Attaf also noted that a representative from another country had attacked Algeria with language unworthy of a response.
