The representative of Djibouti, Mohamed Siad Doualeh, has called on international financial institutions to provide developing nations with increased subsidies and access to financing on more favorable terms. Speaking on global economic challenges, he emphasized the pivotal role of the United Nations in economic coordination, urging the Economic and Social Council to continue leading efforts in addressing emerging issues, fostering innovation, and promoting the integration of economic, social, and environmental goals in sustainable development.
Djibouti has implemented several ambitious, multidimensional initiatives to combat climate change and enhance national resilience. However, the representative expressed concern that climate and development financing remains inadequate, pointing to the unfulfilled promise of $100 billion per year in funding. He stressed the urgency of restoring trust by swiftly disbursing the necessary billions to support climate efforts.
In addition to economic concerns, the representative expressed deep sadness over the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He also reaffirmed the importance of protecting Sudan’s sovereignty amidst its current crisis.
