Declaring the incident a “attempted act of terrorism,” the trustees of a mosque in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), have found explosive devices on Monday.
There is a suspicion that the act stems from opposition to the construction of a place of worship.
In Masjidur Rahman, Durban North, two handmade explosive devices were discovered. The perpetrators hurled the explosives into the property and left the scene when a security vehicle cruising the area intercepted them, according to KZN police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker.
“He called the relevant authorities, who then called the police, because he had a quick suspicion that they were explosive devices.”
A terrorist act
The trustees of Masjidur Rahman emphasized the mosque’s significant role within the community. They highlighted that despite initial resistance to its establishment, the mosque has evolved into a symbol of community unity. It has provided various services, including open day programs, initiatives promoting social cohesion, and humanitarian assistance during crises such as the 2021 looting and water shortages.
The trustees noted that the contributions of the Muslim community to Durban North’s economy and social cohesion have helped dispel previous misunderstandings and stereotypes. They expressed serious concern for the Durban North community following the attempted act of terrorism.
increased security
The trustees mentioned that authorities are currently examining footage from both mosque and security company cameras.
“The mosque has implemented increased security measures and encourages anyone with information regarding the bombing attempt, or who was near the mosque during the incident, to reach out to law enforcement or directly contact the mosque.
“Efforts to apprehend the perpetrators will be persistent and comprehensive. This unacceptable act will not hinder the Muslim community from practicing their faith or fostering interfaith dialogue. The mosque continues to remain open and welcomes visitors as usual,” the trustees stated.
Police have initiated a search for the suspects.
Attack on South African Mosque in 2018
In 2018, assailants armed with firearms and knives launched an attack on a mosque located outside Durban, resulting in the fatal stabbing of an imam and causing serious injuries to two others.
The attackers, three in number, fled the scene in a car after the incident at the Imam Hussain mosque in Verulam.
Police reports indicated that the assailants entered the mosque following midday prayers and stabbed three individuals. “They also set fire to certain rooms before escaping in their vehicle,” stated police spokeswoman Nqobile Gwala at the time.
