Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), has granted 5G licenses to three major telecommunications companies: Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, and e& Egypt. This move is expected to positively impact the nationwide rollout of 5G. Earlier this year, in January, Telecom Egypt secured its 5G license for $150 million, joining these three companies.
MCIT Minister Amr Talaat emphasized the importance of this collaboration with the following statement: “We believe this partnership will be crucial to the success of the 5G rollout in Egypt. The agreements represent a critical step in our efforts to provide advanced technological services to our citizens.”
He also noted that the resulting competitive environment would drive sustainable development. Additionally, he pointed out that this initiative could support the development of IoT-based solutions not only in the service sector but also in vital sectors such as logistics, healthcare, and agriculture.
The regulatory authority in Egypt had previously aimed to issue these licenses earlier but faced delays as telecommunications companies requested more time to secure funding. Nevertheless, Egyptian operators continued to prepare their networks. They established partnerships with Huawei for network deployment and successfully conducted 5G trials with Ericsson. To launch 5G in major cities, they also formed a partnership with Nokia.
