Ghana has inaugurated its first Standard Gauge Railway Line, connecting Tema to Mpakadan, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development. The project, executed by Afcons Infrastructure, was officially commissioned last week by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The $447 million initiative spans 100 kilometers and includes seven passenger stations, a 300-meter railway bridge over the Volta River—the first of its kind in Ghana—along with two rail head facilities, four rail bridges, 11 road underpasses, and 22 road overpasses.
Designed to reduce road congestion and enhance efficiency at the Tema port, the railway will significantly reduce reliance on road transport for long-distance freight and passenger travel.
The project was funded through a credit facility provided by India’s Exim Bank.
