Türkiye’s military-industrial strategy has seen a significant shift toward Africa, with the continent emerging as a key focus for Ankara’s defense exports and partnerships.
Turkish-made weapons, particularly unmanned aerial systems such as the Bayraktar TB-2 and ANKA drones, have gained widespread recognition in African markets, bolstering Türkiye’s reputation as a reliable defense supplier.
Countries including Tunisia, Morocco, and Libya have procured Turkish drones, leveraging their proven effectiveness in conflict zones.
Türkiye’s military engagement in Libya, marked by the 2019 Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of National Accord (GNA), highlights Ankara’s hybrid approach to military influence. This included providing military advisors, advanced equipment, and securing strategic footholds such as the Al-Watiya airbase. Türkiye’s role in Libya has further enabled it to extend its reach into neighboring nations like Algeria, Sudan, and Chad.
Defense and aerospace exports reached a record $5.5 billion in 2023, with a growing share directed toward Africa. Flexible terms and tailored agreements have made Türkiye an appealing alternative for African nations seeking to modernize their militaries. This strategy not only secures markets but also fosters long-term bilateral ties, reinforcing Türkiye’s strategic influence across the continent.
