Four major African clubs, who have qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup where teams from around the globe will compete, will earn a $50 million prize.
Representing the continent in this tournament are Egypt’s Al Ahly, Tunisia’s Esperance, Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca, and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, the dominant domestic champions in recent years.
Mamelodi Sundowns, known for being a financially strong club, will earn a remarkable 900 million rand in local currency.
These clubs have also shown consistent excellence in the CAF Champions League over the years. Since 2015, they are the only clubs to have won the CAF Champions League title.
During this period, Mamelodi Sundowns claimed the trophy once, Wydad Casablanca and Esperance Tunis each won it twice, while Al Ahly lifted the prestigious title four times.
This year, although the group stages have not yet concluded, Sundowns, Al Ahly, and Esperance have already secured their spots in the quarterfinals. Wydad Casablanca, however, is not participating in this year’s tournament.
