CGIAR is advancing its efforts to transform agrifood systems in East and Southern Africa through its new Scaling for Impact Program, part of its 2025–2030 portfolio. Despite previous initiatives, widespread adoption of innovations remains a challenge due to climate change, environmental degradation, geopolitical instability, and other global pressures.
The program aims to scale demand-driven, country-led innovations through broad partnerships, improved policies, and financial mobilization. It focuses on context-specific solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, ensuring national and regional stakeholders play a key role.
Extensive stakeholder consultations have shaped the initiative, engaging government bodies, private sector players, NGOs, and local farmers. Key priorities include multi-stakeholder collaboration, inclusive scaling strategies, and measurable impact evaluation.
CGIAR also emphasizes the importance of local research leadership, capacity building, and leveraging indigenous knowledge alongside scientific advancements. A global innovation clearinghouse is proposed to attract investment and facilitate large-scale adoption of innovations.
By 2030, CGIAR envisions mobilizing science, finance, and partnerships to drive food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development in the region.
CGIAR is a global research partnership dedicated to transforming food, land, and water systems in the face of climate change. It brings together international agricultural research centers to develop science-based solutions for food security, poverty reduction, and environmental sustainability. CGIAR works with governments, NGOs, and private sector partners to scale innovations that improve agriculture, nutrition, and resilience worldwide.
