Artificial intelligence (AI) skills are becoming one of the most in-demand qualifications in the modern job market.
In its latest Job Market Trends report, Pnet shared insights into which sectors in South Africa are hiring AI professionals and how these skills are being applied.
According to the data, between Q4 2019 / Q1 2020 and Q4 2024 / Q1 2025, there has been a 96% increase in the number of AI professionals securing new roles.
As in many parts of the world, AI is no longer just a trend in South Africa — it is a driving force in the labour market.
Which Fields are Using AI Skills?
The report shows that in the past year, IT companies have been the biggest employers of AI professionals, accounting for 62% of all AI-related employment.
Companies specialising in software and AI development are currently the most prominent employers for those with AI expertise.
Around 10% of AI professionals work in the education sector, mainly at academic institutions and universities.
In addition to this, sectors such as finance, consulting, and telecommunications also employ AI professionals, although on a smaller scale.

Pnet highlights that companies are now making serious investments in AI.
Artificial intelligence is no longer seen as an experimental field — it is continuously evolving, being implemented, and reshaping the job market.
