In a road robbery in Wulu County, Lakes State, at least one AVSI employee was shot in the head, three others were viciously assaulted, and belongings, including iPhones, valued at an estimated 500,000 South Sudan pounds, were taken from them. A nonprofit group called AVSI works with South Sudanese communities to help them become more resilient in the face of hardship. The incident occurred on Tuesday, according to police spokesperson Elijah Mabor Makuac, who talked with Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday night. Makuac stated that the Wulu County Primary Healthcare Center (PHCC) was providing treatment to the injured AVSI officers.
“A group of AVSI employees were on their way to Gurmar for an evaluation yesterday [Tuesday] at around 2:0 PM when six criminals with five guns and one club intercepted them, beat them up, and stole their valuables,” the spokesperson stated. He claimed that one of the victims’ pockets contained motorcycle keys that the thieves also took. “The AVSI staff is currently receiving treatment in Wulu County after managing to escape from the robbers,” Makuac stated. According to Angelina Adhel, the chairman of Civil Society Network in Lakes State (CiSON), one of the AVSI organization’s employees informed her about the incident. Adhel denounced the event and called it a danger to the aid workers and the community.
“The community is the immediate recipient of humanitarian services. Such actions paint a very negative picture of the government and the people of Lakes State, the speaker remarked. When attempting to assist those in need in South Sudan, humanitarian workers—who are primarily national employees—face numerous obstacles, including armed conflict, bureaucratic roadblocks, operational disruptions, targeted violence and threats, and asset looting. Notwithstanding the rise in humanitarian needs, incidents targeting aid workers persist in the majority of the nation
