Sierra Leone’s new national airline, Air Sierra Leone, has officially expanded its operations across Africa by introducing flights between Sierra Leone and Lagos, Nigeria.
The airline inaugurated its Lagos route on Wednesday and announced plans to operate three weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
During a ceremony at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Air Sierra Leone’s General Manager, Edgard Lacle, revealed that the airline would be using the E145 aircraft, which has a capacity of approximately 50 passengers. Lacle noted that 36 passengers were on board the inaugural flight and expressed optimism about achieving high passenger demand on the route.
“The E145 is well-suited for this market and the needs of our passengers,” Lacle said. “For now, we will stick to this aircraft type and adjust as the market evolves. Our focus is on offering unique products and services that stand out in the industry. Trade, tourism, and strong connections between Nigerians and Sierra Leoneans drive our operations on this route.”
Air Sierra Leone’s CEO, Emmanuel Iza, described the airline’s launch as a significant milestone and a source of national pride.
“This is more than just the start of an airline,” Iza said. “It marks the rebirth of a national icon. After 15 years, the Sierra Leonean flag is back in the skies, symbolizing the collective determination and resilience of our people. This flight is the beginning of a journey towards greater achievements.”
Additionally, Air Sierra Leone announced a technical partnership with Nigeria’s domestic airline Xejet, which will provide aircraft for its operations. This collaboration aims to enhance efficiency and ensure seamless service delivery.
The new route is expected to strengthen trade, tourism, and cultural ties between the two nations, offering a new travel option for passengers connecting within the region.
