Air Tanzania has announced the launch of a new route to Johannesburg, with flights starting on November 30. According to Travel News, the airline will operate five weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays using a Boeing 737. Round-trip tickets will start at $479 (R8,490), and bookings will soon be available through Air Tanzania’s GDS.
The schedule for the new route includes Flight TC209, which will depart Johannesburg at 14:15 and arrive in Dar es Salaam at 18:30. The return flight, TC208, will leave Dar es Salaam at 11:00, arriving in Johannesburg at 13:15.
In other travel updates from Tanzania, visitors to Zanzibar will now be required to pay a mandatory insurance fee upon arrival. The fee, set at $44 (around R800) per person, will provide coverage for up to 92 days, including health, baggage loss, accidents, emergency evacuations, and repatriation in case of death.
The Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, a government-run entity, will manage the insurance policy, which applies to all tourists regardless of existing travel insurance. Zanzibar’s Finance Minister, Dr. Saada Mkuya Salum, noted that the new fee aims to address challenges faced by tourists. The insurance process is expected to be available online soon, with advance payment required.
With direct flights from South Africa and no visa requirement for short stays, Zanzibar remains a popular destination for South African tourists, offering beautiful beaches like Nungwi and Kendwa, historical attractions in Stone Town, and vibrant Swahili culture.
