Egyptian giants Al Ahly have decided to part ways with Swiss coach Marcel Koller after being eliminated from the CAF Champions League.
Al Ahly, who have lifted the prestigious trophy 12 times, were knocked out by South African side Mamelodi Sundowns. Following the result, the club’s fans reacted with considerable anger.
The club announced the departure through an official statement on social media, saying:
“Al Ahly extend their heartfelt thanks to head coach Marcel Koller for his outstanding contributions during his tenure. Under Koller’s leadership and through collective efforts, Al Ahly captured numerous domestic and continental titles.”
“Al Ahly pay tribute to Marcel Koller’s exceptional leadership and the tireless work of his technical staff, which brought a golden era to the club’s history.”
“In light of recent events, and with mutual respect between both sides, negotiations are ongoing to finalize an amicable termination of Koller’s contract, aiming to preserve the coach’s legacy at the club,”
This Season was Different From the Others
Koller led the team to 11 trophies in less than two years. His achievements included two Egyptian Premier League titles, two Egypt Cups, four Egyptian Super Cups, two CAF Champions League trophies, and a FIFA Club World Cup bronze medal.
However, this season, criticism towards the team grew rapidly. Al Ahly were knocked out of the CAF Champions League, currently trail league leaders Pyramids FC by four points, and were also eliminated from the Egyptian League Cup.
Even more concerning, there is a real possibility that Al Ahly could finish third in the league — something that has not happened in the last 30 years.
