Kenyan police launched an intelligence-led operation against two al-Shabaab camps in Garissa, recovering bomb-making materials. The camps, located on the Kenya-Somalia border, were set up for assembling Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to disrupt civil transport and commerce on major roads between Garissa and Lamu counties. The operation, led by Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG), resulted in the discovery of detonators, IED cylinders, bullets, and communication equipment, which were left behind when the terrorists fled. The police thanked the local communities for their cooperation in sharing intelligence.
This operation comes shortly after an IED attack on November 2 that damaged a police vehicle along the Mandera-Wajir road. While the security situation remains challenging, with al-Shabaab frequently targeting the region, the Kenyan police have ramped up operations to dismantle militants cells and prevent further attacks. Kenyan troops are also operating in Somalia, actively pursuing al-Shabaab militants.
