On Saturday morning, explosions in Mogadishu’s Garasbaley area were set off by suspected al-Shabab terrorists. This caused a fire to spread to the Tabeela Sheikh Ibrahim neighborhood market.
Locals stated that the market and all commercial areas were destroyed by early morning explosives. This is the second market in as many weeks to be devastated by fire after similar explosions.
The federal government ordered the installation of CCTV cameras at the market, and it is thought that this security measure is connected to the attacks. The explosions are thought to be the work of Al-Shabab terrorists, who have objected to the placement of these cameras.
The most recent event comes after a similar attack that occurred the previous week at the Safa and Marwa market in the Elasha Biyaha area, some 15 km south of Mogadishu. A sequence of strong explosions at the market started a large fire.
Since al-Shabab continues to attack markets, it is evident that the organization is still a threat in the area despite government efforts to strengthen security.
