Six Kenyan Police officers were killed and 4 others injured after suspected Al-Shabab militants assaulted a security base in Garissa, northeastern Kenya.
Security Forces Targeted in Deadly Raid
Garissa County Police Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo stated that six Kenyan police officers were killed and four others injured in an attack on a security base near Kenya’s border with Somalia, the Commissioner also said that the assault, which took place early yesterday morning, mirrored past attacks by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group Al-Shabab.
The Militants ambushed police officers at around 5:30 am local time while they were preparing for morning prayers. Militants used various weapons to overrun the camp, The base was hosting local volunteers assisting in securing remote areas and police reservists.
Al-Shabab’s Ongoing Threat to Kenyan Border
Officials believe that Al-Shabab was behind the attack Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The al-Qaeda-affiliated group controls parts of Southern and Central Somalia and frequently conducts cross-border attacks claiming responsibility, targeting military bases, security forces and civilians in Kenya.
The assault underscores ongoing security challenges in the region, Kenyan military has been part of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia since 2011, and several terrorist attacks occurred in Kenya, including Nairobi. Kenyan authorities continue efforts to curb Al-Shabaab activity along the Kenya-Somali boarder.
