UAE accused by the Sudanese government of weakening Sudan’s sovereignty by supporting the passage of humanitarian aid across borders without the approval of the country.
This rise in hostilities comes after the foreign ministry of the United Arab Emirates called on the UN Security Council to approve the crossing of borders and frontlines in order to solve the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.
This amounts to a breach of Sudan’s sovereignty, the foreign ministry of Sudan shot back. The UAE has long been charged by the Sudanese government with inflaming the conflict by arming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is at war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). It says it provided the Security Council with proof of this. Sudan’s foreign ministry questioned the UAE’s sincerity in showing concern for the safety and lives of its citizens in a strongly worded statement that said: “If the UAE is truly concerned about the safety and lives of Sudanese citizens, it should cease providing the militia with weapons used to kill our people and deprive them of food and aid.” Then and only then can there be peace and an end to suffering for humanity.Sudan also questioned the UAE’s intentions in accepting the Security Council’s involvement, requesting a probe into Sudan’s accusations of the UAE’s involvement in the conflict, including accusations of starvation techniques and ethnic cleansing.
The statement also demanded that the UAE reveal the whole amount of public cash allocated by the Emirati government to the Sudanese conflict as well as the scope of its humanitarian relief contributions. This diplomatic scuffle complicates the already difficult situation in Sudan by casting doubt on the involvement of outside parties in the humanitarian catastrophe and impeding attempts to reach a peaceful conclusion. It also makes U.S. attempts to work with the UAE to end the war in Sudan more difficult, something that the military authorities are adamantly against.
Al-Harith Idris, Sudan’s UN envoy, fanned the flames by accusing unidentified nations and international organizations of smuggling fuel and ammunition to the RSF under the pretense of humanitarian aid through the “Adre” border crossing with Chad.
