The region of Somaliland is an integral part of Somalia, as reiterated at the third meeting of the Arab League’s ministerial group, which is tasked with overseeing the implementation of the League’s decision to support the Federal Republic of Somalia in its defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also emphasized that the decision is grounded in the principles of the UN and Arab League charters.
The ministerial group met on Tuesday at the foreign ministers’ level during the 162nd session of the Arab League. The media reports that the group stressed that “any arrangements regarding this region should stem from political dialogue among the Somali people themselves.”
As stated by Somaliland’s minister of international cooperation, Ahmed Malim Fiqi, “Somalia considers the memorandum of understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia to be null, void, and unacceptable.”
As explained by Fiqi, Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial unity, and regional peace are all at risk because of the MoU, which is a flagrant breach of international law.
Along with rejecting the memorandum and any potential legal, political, commercial, or military repercussions, the ministerial group reaffirmed full Arab solidarity with Somalia.
In its statement, the organization highlighted “the necessity for the Arab League to participate in any Somali, Arab, or African efforts to defend Somalia’s sovereignty against the memorandum and support national reconciliation efforts to preserve the country’s unity and territorial integrity.”
To plan further Arab actions in support of Somalia’s demands, the ministerial group has scheduled its fourth meeting for March 2025, coinciding with the next session of the Arab League.
