The Sudanese army said on Wednesday that at least 10 civilians, including a 3-year-old child, were killed and 23 others were wounded in an artillery attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Darfur.
The army said the attack targeted shelters in the capital of North Darfur, El-Fasher, which serves as a major humanitarian hub for the region. The RSF has not yet responded to the allegations.
The army has been regaining territory in recent weeks, forcing RSF fighters to withdraw from Khartoum and parts of other states. However, the paramilitary group still controls four of the five Darfur states, while northern and eastern Sudan remain largely unaffected by the ongoing conflict.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in fighting between the army and the RSF, with over 20,000 deaths and 15 million displaced people, according to UN figures and local officials. However, studies from US universities suggest the true death toll could be as high as 130,000.
