At least 10 Nigerien soldiers lost their lives in an ambush near the country’s border with Burkina Faso, the Nigerien army announced on Wednesday night.
The attack took place on Monday in the western Takzat village, where soldiers were conducting an operation, according to a statement broadcast on public television.
In response, the Nigerien Armed Forces launched a counter-operation the following day, killing around 15 suspected militants in the area.
This latest assault follows a similar attack in December, where 10 soldiers were killed and seven wounded near the same border region.
Niger’s Tillaberi region, particularly the Bankilare and Tera areas, has been a hotspot for violence since 2017, with armed groups linked to terrorist organizations frequently launching attacks across the “three borders” zone between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.
