One of the strong teams in the Ghanaian league, Asante Kotoko, which is currently in second place, faced Nsoatreman.
During this match, a fan named Francis Yaw Frimpong got into a heated argument with supporters of the opposing team and was killed.
During the match, spectators stormed the pitch and threw various objects. Some even entered the field and attacked players. Asante Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, later revealed that he was attacked after the match.
Asante Kotoko strongly condemned the incident, stating, “An unacceptable loss of life has occurred. This is a devastating situation.” Nsoatreman also commented on the violence, saying, “Football is not a war.”
The match was briefly halted before eventually continuing, with Nsoatreman winning 1-0. Tributes poured in from across the country for Francis Yaw Frimpong, who was also known by his nickname, Pooley.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has banned Nsoatreman’s home stadium, Nana Koramansah Park, until further notice and announced that an investigation has been launched.
In recent years, the Ghanaian league has significantly lost its popularity. Violence in Ghanaian football remains a serious issue. In 2001, an incident in Accra resulted in the deaths of 120 people. Despite measures taken afterward, several violent incidents have continued to occur.
Such events contribute to the decline of interest in the league. Referees and opposing teams fear for their safety, raising concerns about the future of Ghanaian football.
