Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla, has accused Ukraine of supporting terrorist activities in Africa’s Sahel region, claiming this is an attempt to undermine Russia’s influence. In a recent interview with Russian media, Kyélem de Tambèla emphasized the strengthening of Burkina Faso’s relationship with Russia, describing it as a key ally in countering other global powers.
The two nations are expanding cooperation in military, economic, and cultural sectors, as highlighted at the Burkina Faso Economic Days Forum in Moscow, where long-term business ties were discussed.
Cultural links are also growing, with Russia opening a cultural center in Burkina Faso and plans for a digital university in Ouagadougou. Additionally, youth organizations are fostering connections between young people from both countries, reflecting increased bilateral trust. In terms of energy, discussions on nuclear and hydroelectric solutions are underway, while Russia has shown interest in Burkina Faso’s agricultural exports, such as cotton and mangoes, with plans to develop cotton processing facilities.
On security, Burkina Faso condemned Ukraine’s alleged interference in the Sahel, accusing it of trying to disrupt Russia’s military cooperation with nations like Mali and Niger. Kyélem de Tambèla expressed solidarity with Mali, stating that any attack on Mali would also be seen as an attack on Burkina Faso and Niger. He also criticized France’s involvement in the region, emphasizing that Burkina Faso and other Sahel nations are shifting away from traditional Western powers and seeking stronger ties with Russia and non-Western allies. As part of this pivot, Burkina Faso is considering joining the BRICS group to further diversify its economic and political partnerships.
Kyélem de Tambèla’s statements highlight Burkina Faso’s evolving foreign policy, focused on reducing reliance on Western nations, broadening global partnerships, and asserting greater control over its future, with Russia playing a central role in these efforts.
