Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela, held a high-level meeting on Friday with Igor Martynov, Russia’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, to discuss strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The conversation primarily focused on enhancing security cooperation and addressing key economic challenges, particularly in energy.
During the meeting, Kyelem de Tambela stressed the importance of modernizing Burkina Faso’s military in the face of growing security threats in the Sahel region. The Prime Minister highlighted the need for advanced military equipment and technological support to combat terrorism and counter external destabilizing efforts. “We are facing persistent terrorism and instability, often fueled by outside influences. It is critical that we join forces to address these security concerns. We are also exploring arms agreements to bolster our defense capabilities,” Kyelem de Tambela stated.
In addition to defense matters, Kyelem de Tambela called for improved control over Burkina Faso’s airspace, proposing the deployment of both civilian and military satellites to enhance regional security. The Prime Minister also voiced concerns over the country’s frequent power shortages, emphasizing the need for a diversified energy strategy. While nuclear energy remains a priority, he called for the expansion of thermal and hydroelectric power plants to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply for the nation’s future development.
Addressing the logistical challenges between the two countries, the Prime Minister suggested the introduction of direct flights between Moscow and Ouagadougou to facilitate smoother diplomatic and business exchanges.
Ambassador Martynov, speaking on the growing partnership, described the relationship between Russia and Burkina Faso as “dynamic” and full of potential. He noted that Russian businesses were eager to invest in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and technology. Furthermore, Martynov indicated that efforts were underway to streamline visa procedures for Burkinabe citizens, making travel between the two countries easier and encouraging closer ties.
