A tragic bus accident in northeastern Egypt has claimed the lives of 12 university students and left 33 others injured, according to a statement from the health ministry on Monday night.
The students, from Galala University near Suez, were traveling back to their dormitory at Porto Sokhna resort via the Ain Sokhna highway when the bus overturned. Local reports suggest that the students were returning from their classes, and the bus driver has been detained for further investigation.
While the exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined, 28 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, transferring the injured to the Suez Medical Complex. The ministry did not provide details on the condition of the injured.
Egypt has a history of frequent road accidents, with speeding, unsafe roads, and poor enforcement of traffic regulations contributing to thousands of deaths annually.
