Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has launched the seventh cycle of the Global Fund Grant at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, securing an initial amount of US$525 million (about K910 billion).
In his speech, Chakwera emphasized that this initiative represents a renewed effort to tackle HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, which have long hindered Malawi’s development and affected its people.
He expressed deep gratitude to the Global Fund’s contributors, acknowledging their exceptional dedication to enhancing the health and well-being of Malawians.
He also lauded the Global Fund for its support since 2003, including during the COVID-19 crisis, helping to advance Malawi’s health initiatives.
“I am deeply honored today, as this grant reflects the Global Fund’s unwavering support, especially after I was named champion during their 7th Replenishment campaign. This funding highlights their dedication to improving health outcomes in key areas like Malawi,” the President said.
He highlighted that past grants have facilitated broader access to essential health services, improved the availability of critical medications, and enhanced healthcare infrastructure by funding ambulances, gas plants, modern diagnostic equipment like CT scans, and the recruitment of thousands of healthcare workers.
The President affirmed the government’s commitment to fortifying health systems, adopting innovative approaches, and enhancing supply chain management to ensure that high-quality medicines and supplies reach even the most remote areas.
