Sudan is grappling with a severe cholera outbreak, with confirmed cases surpassing 51,000 since August 2024. The epidemic, fueled by floods and overcrowded displacement camps, has claimed over 1,350 lives.
The outbreak began following heavy rains and flooding, severely impacting Sudan’s already fragile healthcare system. Approximately 80% of health facilities in conflict zones and 40% in other regions are non-operational, compounding the crisis.
On Monday alone, 36 new cholera cases were recorded, raising the total to 51,202 across 82 localities in 11 states. Dengue fever is also spreading, with 10 new infections reported, bringing the total to 9,543 cases, including 16 fatalities.
Additionally, 48,851 displaced families have taken refuge in 70 camps across Kassala, Gedaref, and River Nile states, after fleeing eastern Al Jazirah.
Authorities are deploying support teams to prioritize aid delivery in army-controlled areas, including Wad Madani, the capital of Al Jazirah state, to mitigate the worsening health crisis.
