In a statement at the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, Jean-Claude Gakosso, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Congo, condemned the long-standing exploitation of Africa’s natural resources by Western powers. He argued that while the continent is rich in resources, it has seen limited progress due to outside interference.
Gakosso criticized the historical approach of Western nations, which he believes have viewed Africa solely as a source of raw materials rather than a partner for mutual growth.
“Africans were deceived by Western powers, who only saw the continent’s resources as a means to enrich themselves,” Gakosso remarked during the Ministerial Conference.
The Congolese minister highlighted the stark contrast between Africa’s vast natural wealth and the slow pace of its development, a trend he attributes to continued exploitation by foreign interests.
“Africa’s natural wealth is undeniable, but its advancement has not matched its potential. We’ve made progress, but it has not been as fast or as transformative as we would have liked,” he added.
Gakosso’s comments serve as a reminder of the complex legacy of resource extraction and its ongoing impact on Africa’s development trajectory.
