Last week, the NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo, who passed away and left many basketball fans in mourning, was born on June 25, 1966, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
One of eight children in his family, Dikembe developed an interest in basketball at a young age and gained admission to Georgetown University in the United States in 1988. His basketball career began there.
After his time at the university, he was drafted by the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks as the 4th pick. Mutombo won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2001, and was considered one of the best defenders of his time, playing for eight different NBA teams.
e recorded 3,289 blocks during his career, making him the second all-time shot blocker in NBA history, after Hakeem Olajuwon. Although he never won a championship, he was selected three times for the All-NBA Team and six times for the All-Defensive Team. He represented his country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at the Olympics in 1992, 1996, and 2000.
Beyond his professional career, Mutombo was known for his philanthropy, establishing the Mutombo Foundation in 1997. This foundation organized hundreds of projects in the fields of education and health. He contributed a significant portion of his wealth to support the construction of a hospital in his home country.
Dikembe Mutombo served as an exemplary citizen and left this world as a philanthropist. The beautiful legacy he left for both the NBA and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will remain with us forever.
