The President of Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo stated in UN General Assembly that the situation in the eastern Congo is critical due to the resurgence of the M23 armed group, backed by Rwanda.
He said that this situation has led to a humanitarian crisis, with nearly 7 million internally displaced people, and a serious violation of DRC’s sovereignty.
He called on the international community to condemn these actions and impose sanctions on Rwanda. While diplomatic efforts like the Luanda talks are promising, urgent action is needed to resolve the crisis, including the immediate withdrawal of Rwandan troops, he added.
“The DRC remains committed to achieving lasting peace in the east, promoting economic development, and safeguarding its territorial integrity.” he stated.
“The country supports the roadmap from the Luanda process aimed at restoring trust with Rwanda while preventing the crisis from escalating into a regional conflict. The DRC is open to initiatives from international partners to reach peace.” he said.
He emphesized that the DRC is focused on implementing the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Reintegration, and Stabilization Program (P-DDRCS), which is central to disarming and reintegrating fighters while stabilizing conflict-affected areas.
He also highlighted that the DRC aims to repatriate foreign combatants as part of this process.
“Recognizing the ongoing suffering of victims of economic-driven genocide in the DRC (GENOCOST), we have institutionalized August 2 as a day of remembrance.”
“This day honors the victims of atrocities committed by rebels backed by multinational corporations and regional states, fostering national reflection on the past while working towards justice, reconciliation, and sustainable development for the affected communities.”
