A delegation from the ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security has been in Guinea-Bissau since Monday, October 28, 2024, for an operational visit. The team is led by General Mactar Diop, Chief of Staff of the ECOWAS Standby Force, and includes Dr. Sani Adamu, Head of the Peace Support Operations Division, along with several senior officials from the Commission.
The purpose of this visit is to ensure the effective implementation of the Guinea-Bissau Stabilisation Support Mission, focusing particularly on operational aspects. The first day involved courtesy visits to various authorities at different levels.
The delegation also inspected a level 2 hospital set up by Côte d’Ivoire, which provides medical services to both Force personnel and the civilian population. Since the hospital’s deployment in May 2022, nearly 26,000 patients have received treatment free of charge, significantly enhancing the Mission’s reputation among locals.
The day’s activities concluded with a joint patrol in the Reino da Jaal district, on the outskirts of Bissau, an area experiencing inter-ethnic conflict over land between the Pepel and Balliante communities. This patrol allowed the delegation to observe the working conditions of the staff firsthand and included inspections of guard posts at various state institutions and the residences of certain government officials.
The mission’s agenda will also involve inspections of contingents from Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal.
