The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on Türkiye to strengthen its support for regional efforts to combat security threats, particularly for West Africa.
ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray made the appeal on Tuesday during a farewell visit by outgoing Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hidayet Bayraktar, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Touray praised Türkiye’s contributions to Africa and its global leadership, noting its role as a key partner for ECOWAS. He urged Türkiye to continue assisting in the fight against terrorism and efforts to maintain peace and stability in West Africa.
“Türkiye is a major and important partner of ECOWAS, and its leadership is widely acknowledged across Africa,” Touray said. “Insecurity remains our biggest challenge, and no single member state can tackle it alone.”
Bayraktar reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in counterterrorism efforts and promoting regional security.
