Egypt and Sudan met in Cairo on Sunday for political consultations. They discussed ways to enhance cooperation and address regional challenges, according to a joint statement.
The foreign ministers of both countries led the talks. They focused on strengthening ties by reviewing agreements, memorandums of understanding, and executive programs. The delegations emphasized the need for precision in these documents and agreed on setting a timeline for convening specialized joint committees to streamline collaboration.
They highlighted economic cooperation, praising the first Egyptian-Sudanese business forum held in November. They stressed the importance of thorough preparation for the upcoming forum, highlighting Egypt’s potential role in Sudan’s reconstruction efforts and the expansion of trade exchanges and joint investments.
The conflict in Sudan was a major topic. Both sides emphasized Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. They also supported the Armed Forces and opposed foreign interference. They jointly opposed foreign interference in Sudan’s internal affairs and called for resolving the crisis through a Sudanese-led process.
Egypt extended gratitude to Sudan for measures facilitating humanitarian aid deliveries, including the establishment of warehouses for receiving and distributing shipments. Meanwhile, Sudan expressed appreciation to Egypt for hosting Sudanese displaced by the conflict.
They discussed infrastructure and development, including joint projects to improve electricity and road connectivity. Notably, Egypt has rehabilitated Sudan’s Wadi Halfa Harbor to boost inland transportation within Sudan and between the two countries.
Water security was also a priority. They agreed to safeguard their water rights and promote unity among Nile Basin countries. They also committed to coordinating on security matters in the Red Sea.
On regional matters, they opposed any actions undermining the Palestinian cause. They also supported an inclusive political process in Syria to preserve its territorial integrity. The delegations welcomed Lebanon’s presidential election and expressed support for stability in the country.
The consultations underscored a shared vision for regional stability and strengthened bilateral relations, setting the stage for continued dialogue and partnership between Egypt and Sudan.
