Egypt’s foreign ministry strongly criticized what it described as “brutal assaults” by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s eastern Al Jazirah state, condemning the targeting of unarmed civilians, particularly vulnerable groups like children, women, and the elderly. The attacks have reportedly led to mass displacements, pushing thousands from their homes.
Reaffirming Cairo’s stance on preserving Sudan’s national institutions, especially its army, Egypt’s statement called for the safeguarding of Sudan’s unity and stability. In its appeal, Egypt reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized implementing the Jeddah Declaration, signed in May 2023 by the RSF and Sudanese army in Saudi Arabia, which outlines measures for civilian protection.
“Egypt is committed, in cooperation with international partners, to help end the suffering of the Sudanese people and support efforts to achieve peace,” the ministry said.
This marks Egypt as the first neighboring Arab nation to openly denounce the RSF’s reported violence against civilians in Al Jazirah state. International bodies have similarly condemned the RSF’s alleged abuses, including displacement, civilian fatalities, and incidents of sexual violence.
