Egypt has taken a major step in advancing its medical sector. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, oversaw the signing of an agreement to establish the country’s first ultrasound device manufacturing facility. This initiative is a collaboration between Tatweer Medical Industries and Mindray, a leading Chinese medical equipment company.
The agreement aims to produce ultrasound devices locally, reducing dependence on imports and improving Egypt’s healthcare system. The Ministry of Health has pledged full support by providing resources and regulatory assistance to ensure the project’s success.
Minister Abdel Ghaffar highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating that local production will strengthen the healthcare sector, lower costs, and increase access to medical equipment. He assured that the government would offer all necessary support to facilitate the project.
Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar emphasized that this collaboration aligns with Egypt’s goal to attract foreign investment and enhance local manufacturing. He stated that producing high-quality ultrasound devices at competitive prices would improve healthcare services nationwide.
The first ultrasound devices made in Egypt will be available in April, with an expected annual output of 2,500 units. This initiative will help meet the country’s growing demand for medical imaging technology and may open export opportunities in the region.
The project also includes training programs for Egyptian technicians and engineers. These programs will ensure knowledge transfer and equip professionals with the skills to operate and maintain the new equipment effectively.
Hesham Abu Steit, Chairperson of the Unified Procurement Authority, stressed the importance of local manufacturing in strengthening Egypt’s medical supply chain. He reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to supporting investors and removing obstacles to the project’s success.
The agreement was signed by Ahmed El Ezaby, Chairperson of Tatweer Medical Industries, and Joy Fay, Regional Director for Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East at Mindray. This partnership positions Egypt as a key player in medical device production, paving the way for further advancements in healthcare technology.
As Egypt pushes toward self-sufficiency in medical equipment manufacturing, this initiative serves as a model for other African nations aiming to develop their healthcare industries and reduce reliance on foreign imports.
