Egypt is intensifying efforts to end Israel’s ongoing military campaign against Lebanon, with Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stating on Wednesday that the country is working to halt the Israeli assault “as quickly as possible.”
Abdelatty, who arrived in Beirut early Wednesday morning, engaged in high-level talks with Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, to discuss the rapidly escalating situation.
During his visit, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s firm support for Lebanon, emphasizing that Cairo is committed to providing all necessary assistance to help the Lebanese people cope with the ongoing crisis. “Egypt fully stands with Lebanon, offering every form of support during this difficult time,” Abdelatty affirmed.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister also revealed that his government is actively engaging in daily diplomatic discussions with key international and regional players, including the United States, France, the European Union, and Arab nations, in a concerted effort to halt Israel’s military actions. “Our goal is to put an end to the brutal Israeli aggression on Lebanon as soon as possible,” Abdelatty stated.
Egypt’s involvement is centered on facilitating ceasefire negotiations and addressing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Lebanon, which has been exacerbated by Israel’s airstrikes. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Abdelatty’s consultations with Lebanese leaders will focus on both the prospects for a ceasefire and the urgent need for international intervention to alleviate the suffering of the Lebanese people.
Israel’s aerial campaign, which intensified in late September, targets what it claims are Hezbollah positions. This latest escalation is a continuation of the year-long cross-border hostilities that erupted after Israel launched a military offensive on Gaza on October 7, 2023.
According to Lebanese health authorities, the Israeli strikes have caused widespread devastation, with nearly 3,300 dead, more than 14,200 injured, and over a million displaced since October 2023. On October 1, Israel further expanded the conflict by launching a ground incursion into southern Lebanon, marking another significant escalation in the ongoing violence.
