Egypt has secured its position as the world’s top producer of palm dates, generating more than 1.8 million tons annually and contributing 18 percent of global production, according to a statement from the Egyptian cabinet.
Despite this impressive output, exports remain modest, with only 50,000 tons exported each year, said Hossam Shawky, head of the Desert Research Centre. Shawky emphasized that the government is intensifying efforts to develop the date palm sector to cater to both domestic and international markets.
The state’s initiative focuses on supporting thousands of date palm farmers and improving marketing capabilities to increase Egypt’s global market share. This initiative not only bolsters the agricultural sector but also plays a significant role in rural development and aligns with Egypt’s broader goals of agricultural innovation and sustainability.
Boosting Agricultural Exports
Egypt’s efforts to enhance its agricultural output are reflected in its food export growth. According to the Food Export Council, Egypt’s food industry exports have risen to $4.6 billion since January, up from $3.9 billion in 2023, marking an 18 percent increase. Key export products include soft drink concentrates, flour and starch, and frozen strawberries.
The development of the date palm sector is a critical component of Egypt’s strategy to strengthen its agricultural economy while supporting rural communities and achieving sustainable growth.
