Egypt has firmly opposed the establishment of any parallel government to the legitimate Sudanese authorities, as announced by Sudan’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday. This rejection follows a recent political charter signed in Nairobi, Kenya, by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and several Sudanese political and armed groups, which proposed the creation of an alternative government.
The Sudanese government condemned Kenya’s role in hosting what it described as an effort to establish a rival government for the RSF. In a meeting in Cairo, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yousif Sharif and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized the importance of supporting Sudan’s legitimate government. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s stance, rejecting any external interference in Sudan’s internal matters.
The two ministers also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties and addressed regional issues, including security in the Red Sea and water-related concerns in the Horn of Africa. Egypt expressed its readiness to assist in Sudan’s reconstruction, signaling continued support for the country amidst its ongoing conflict.
Since April 2023, Sudan’s military and the RSF have been engaged in a violent conflict that has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced millions. Despite international calls for peace, the war continues to devastate the nation, with widespread famine and a growing humanitarian crisis. The conflict has spread to multiple regions, further complicating efforts for peace and stability in Sudan.
