The United Nations General Assembly has officially re-elected Egypt to serve as a member of the Peacebuilding Commission for the 2025-2026 term, further solidifying the country’s influential position in global peace and security initiatives.
Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, confirmed the re-election on Saturday, highlighting it as a testament to the international community’s recognition of Egypt’s significant contributions to peacebuilding, both within the African continent and on the global stage. The re-election comes ahead of the UN’s comprehensive review of its peacebuilding framework scheduled for 2025, positioning Egypt at the forefront of shaping future peacebuilding strategies.
Ambassador Abdel Khalek emphasized that Egypt’s reappointment underscores its pivotal role in mobilizing resources for peace initiatives, advocating for sustainable financing, and playing a central role in resolving conflicts, particularly across Africa. As a member of the Peacebuilding Commission, Egypt is expected to contribute to the design of key policies, aimed at fostering peace and stability, while also promoting development in post-conflict regions.
One of the key factors behind Egypt’s continued leadership in peacebuilding efforts is its hosting of the African Union’s Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development. This institution serves as a critical hub for advancing peace and facilitating post-conflict recovery across the continent. Egypt’s deep-rooted involvement in African peace and security initiatives, coupled with its strategic geographical position, makes it an indispensable actor in resolving regional conflicts.
The re-election follows Egypt’s earlier tenure on the Peacebuilding Commission for the 2023-2024 term, which was endorsed by the General Assembly in December 2022. Ambassador Abdel Khalek attributed this victory to the overwhelming support from the African group at the UN, acknowledging the pivotal role Egypt has played in peacebuilding efforts across Africa. The ambassador also noted that this re-election is a recognition of Egypt’s steady commitment to both peace and development across the continent.
Additionally, Egypt’s leadership in global peacebuilding was exemplified when it chaired the Peacebuilding Commission in 2021, representing Africa’s interests in a year of significant challenges. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s administration has been notably focused on post-conflict reconstruction, with initiatives designed to support the rebuilding of countries affected by war and instability. His work through the African Union continues to foster a broader agenda of regional cooperation, aimed at addressing Africa’s most pressing security challenges and strengthening efforts for peace.
In the coming years, Egypt’s role on the Peacebuilding Commission is expected to become even more crucial, with the international community relying on its expertise and leadership to drive forward the UN’s peacebuilding agenda, particularly in Africa’s most fragile and conflict-affected regions.
