Egypt has strongly opposed attempts to form an another government in Sudan, warning that such actions threaten the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement on Sunday, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said it rejects any move that would deepen Sudan’s political crisis, stressing that such attempts complicate reconciliation efforts and worsen the humanitarian situation. Cairo called on all Sudanese groups to prioritize national interests and participate in an inclusive political process without external interference.
The discussion follows a recent agreement in Nairobi, where the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Sudanese political groups and armed movements signed a political charter on February 22 to form an alternative government. The Sudanese government has strongly opposed Kenya’s intervention and recalled its ambassador from Nairobi in response. Kenya has defended its role, claiming it is working in coordination with the United Nations and the African Union to help resolve the Sudanese conflict.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese army has made territorial gains against the RSF in Khartoum, Gezira, White Nile and North Kordofan. According to reports, the army now controls 90% of Bahri, most of Omdurman and 60% of Khartoum, but the RSF still holds positions in the eastern and southern parts of the capital.
Sudan has been in turmoil since the conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF broke out in April 2023, causing more than 20,000 deaths and displacing 14 million people, according to UN figures. However, US university studies estimate the actual death toll to be around 130,000.
