Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has affirmed the government’s dedication to completing the first phase of the Egyptian-Saudi electricity interconnection project by May 2025, which is set to provide a capacity of 1,500 megawatts.
Upon the successful completion of this initial phase, work will commence on a subsequent phase that will also feature a capacity of 1,500 megawatts.
Madbouly highlighted the project’s timeline during a recent visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Cairo, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the project’s progress.
Stressing the importance of meeting deadlines, Madbouly indicated that the implementing companies will be subject to monthly evaluations to ensure adherence to the timeline.
On Thursday, Madbouly convened a meeting with key officials to assess the status of the electricity interconnection project.
Attendees included Eng. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy; Eng. Sabah Mashali, Deputy Minister; Eng. Mona Rizk, Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company; Eng. Mohamed Shukry, Project Manager at SNC Lavalin; Eng. Ahmed El-Sayed, Chairman of Giza Cables Manufacturing Company; Sami Su, General Manager of the Chinese company CEEC in Egypt; Eng. Yasser Naguib, Head of the Energy and Water Solutions Sector at Orascom Construction; Adham Kamel, Project Manager at Prysmian Power Link; and other officials from relevant agencies.
Eng. Mahmoud Esmat reiterated the ministry’s commitment to completing the project within the agreed timeframe, emphasizing ongoing coordination with Saudi counterparts.
Eng. Mohamed Shoukry provided detailed updates on the technical progress of the project, outlining the implementation schedules and reporting significant advancements in its execution.
This ambitious interconnection project aims to enhance energy cooperation between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, paving the way for increased electricity trade in the region.
